Design Challenge:
UK Solutions Systems Ltd, a software developer to the travel and recreation insurance market, approached Touch Interactive to design and develop a ski and snowboard helmet which their clients could offer to their customers, in return for a reduced cost in ski and snowboard insurance. This was an unusual move for a software developer, however, they saw a clear market opportunity for a product which could help reduce the risks and insurance costs of winter sports. In return, UK Solutions Systems would have their profile raised in the insurance market, by providing a much broader solution to the insurance market and developing a holistic approach to recreation and insurance solutions.
Our brief was to design and develop a cost effective and innovative ski and snowboard helmet and if possible to create a product that users would wear both for style as well as necessity in equal measure.
Design Solution:
Made from high density checked polystyrene and ABS the SnowCap ski and snowboard helmet is designed with safety and style in mind. The design itself was influenced in part by a helmet worn by Anakin Skywalker in the pod race scene of The Phantom Menace. This was the part of his helmet used to protect his neck from the sun which gave us the idea that a similar idea would be to create a removable fleece section which would protect against the cold. These 'dog ears' became central to the design, with a selection of modern colour combinations to appeal to a wider audience. We deliberately created a warm and organic look, rather than something that was too high-tech and loud.
