Design Challenge:
Most contemporary DVD players have been designed to emulate the look and function of the traditional video cassette player. However, the compact proportions of the DVD disk, and the required physical proportions of the DVD player itself means that there is no valuable reason to emulate the housing of cassette players when designing new DVD products. Indeed, to do this is a backward approach to the design of new electronic products. The challenge here is to regenerate the look and feel of a home entertainment system through the design of a new generation DVD system.
Design Solution:
The design solution here was to create a hybrid player and display system as one unified product. The DVD housing has a warm metallic look, with a cool blue edge, to give it both an organic and high tech. feeling. This housing supports a high quality digital wide screen display and has simple controls with just an 'on' button to start up the system. The overall size is surprisingly small, with a screen the width of a 19 inch computer monitor. This makes the product more flexible to moving around, allowing users to view it where they please at home. This flexibility also allows it to be used as a presentation device in an office for example.
