Design Challenge:
This is the second resurrection of a product designed by Christian Mark Rødland in 1995. 'Senior Al Dente' is an electronic pasta cooker for the domestic household market. This electronic kitchen appliance was developed after initial research was conducted into the growing market for healthy mediteranean foods, in particular pasta, which in the early 90's saw a huge jump in sales in the UK. However, the existing process of cooking pasta, using a pan and sieve, was found to be too cumbersome for some, with pasta often overcooked , or lost half way down the sink, or at worst scalding the cook.

The challenge here was to develop a new, safe and fun way of boiling pasta using conventional appliance technology.

Design Solution:
Senior Al Dente was designed for fun. It has a human-like appearance, almost like an overweight Italian cook. It's body is made of high quality stainless steel, with plastic 'arms' injection moulded with a mat pasta colour. The product has a control panel reminiscent of the interior of an italian sports car, with chrome buttons and a 50's style clock, which can be programmed to cook pasta within seconds of "al dente" perfection!
