Design Challenge:
For many software developers who develop high end software programs, such as professional 3D applications, the dongle (security key) is a very important device to ensure their program can only be used by those who have legally purchased the program. However, many users complain about its awkward looks and general lack of character, as well as its 'hassle' connotations.
The design challenge for Touch Interactive was to develop a new use for a hardware security key, adding colour and character to what is generally seen as a necessary but unfriendly product.
Design Solution:
The 'dongle drive', as we like to call it, has two functions in one. First it acts as a security key, which is its primary function, but second it also stores up to 1gb of memory. This in itself makes the dongle drive a very useful device. Moreover, the product allows the developer to supply the dongle with digital information which otherwise would be included in a separate CD, such as training material, user guides, finished examples etc. etc. In other words the product could store everything the user needs related to the product in one device, including installation software. The developer could therefore supply the dongle without any additional installation CD's.
As a multi-functional device the product has character, and no longer needs to be connected to the back of a computer, but now can be connected to the keyboard for example. The organic shape and curved lines gives it a more appealing look, and with its new function and character it no longer is a product of disdain.
