Design Challenge:
As part of a concept development program Touch Interactive developed the Digital Atlas. This project falls under the CONTEXT OF USE design model which is part of our Computer Related Industrial Design service. The CONTEXT OF USE design model is based on the exploration and breakdown of existing Human Computer Interaction (HCI) stereo-types for the benefit of design and innovation for specific forms of Human Computer Interaction. In this case the Digital Atlas concept was developed after research was conducted into the internet CAM phenomenon, which allows users to access still and animated LIVE imagery from global positions and from satellites. The project assumes that within 5 -7 years high speed wireless digital bandwidth will allow the practical access of high resolution imagery and in turn this in itself will create niche opportunities for new interactive products such as the Digital Atlas.

Design Solution:
This is a product for the domestic domain. The concept is designed to work in a similar way that a traditional paper based atlas would do.The prominent edges and subtle differences in brushed metal effects enhances the smooth but distinct curves, allowing the user to see the product as being similar to a book, with paper-like metaphorical shapes, wide horizontal footprint and thin profile. The large screen hints that this is a product to be used for visual purposes and with a touch sensitive surface also a book for exploring. The titanium enclosure is protected by a detachable leather cover, which enhances its book-like appearance. The cover also allows the product to be stored in a shelf with other books, ready to be explored in piece and quiet after a day in the office, for example. The concept would also double as a digital photographic and video album and used in its appropriate environment, whilst sitting on a sofa, or shared amongst friends and visitors.
